Happy New Year! If you're the New Year's resolution type, you probably already have plans to purchase a gym membership, eat healthier, and perhaps like me, take the time to finish those many projects you started. In this article, we suggest some fun and attainable music lesson goals to kick off 2022!!
1. Take Up an Instrument. Any Instrument
Have you wanted to learn to play the Guitar? Or make use of the piano that is sitting in the living room? Or sing a song with confidence? There is no time like now. If you think it is too late, it is definitely not.
In our last Adult recital, we had over twenty adults joyfully performing at the Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad, California. With smiles on their faces, they got up on the stage, sang, played the piano, the drums, and the Guitar.
Every student had worked diligently throughout the year and played beautifully. Some of them even asked to "start over" to calm their nerves. However, everyone was excited to support their dream and the dreams of others.
2. Pick Up Your Instrument every day.
Yes, life is busy. Other things are sometimes more urgent. Something important will always come up that gets in the way of learning music, don’t let it! And, don't think of practice as settling in for a long practice session.
Think of it as taking 5 minutes, 10 minutes, or whatever you can realistically do daily. Everyone has 5 minutes. Chances are, you will get “so into it” that you will probably put in more time without even realizing it. Greeting your instrument every day for even 5 minutes will bring you closer to the dream you have.
3. Share Your Music with Friends or Family
It does not have to be for a big audience. What is important is that you're sharing your music with others. Music is deeply personal, but it's also a social activity. Sign up to participate in a recital, audition for a musical, or play the piano one evening for your family. Too nervous? Record yourself and play it back to others if you are too shy to perform. But in the end, share it.
4. Be Playful
Mechanical practicing might get you part of the way to musicianship. Lighten up a little bit and allow yourself to be playful. Music is fun, and some days, have fun and be playful with your songs.
5. Already play an Instrument?
If you already play an instrument, try something new. Are you only playing classical music? Learn a pop song and see if you discover that you love to sing while you play. Only play the Guitar? Try a voice lesson. It doesn't matter what you do, try something new!
We hope your New Year includes the Joy of playing and learning something new!!
