What is an Eclipse?
An eclipse is an astronomical event that occurs when a celestial object or planet moves into the shadow of another celestial object. The word “eclipse” has its origin from the ancient Greek noun ekleipsis, which means, “I cease to exist,” or “I am absent.” This term is used to describe either a Solar Eclipse (when the Moon’s shadow crosses the Earth’s surface) or a Lunar Eclipse, (the Moon moves into the shadow of the Earth).
Eclipses in Astrology
Eclipses are very important Astrological events too! Actually, in the early days astronomy and astrology were actually undivided and studied together. Astrology was the first social science and was more valuable due to its usefulness in planning daily activities. Drawing up a horoscope was a time-consuming process used primarily for the wealthy, royalty and kings. Circumstances such as Eclipses were only available to those individuals. Astronomy actually flourished only later on after the advent of the telescope.
In the early days (as well as today) eclipses were considered a very powerful phenomenon. But throughout history they were regarded as highly threatening and ominous. People were just simply terrified of a solar eclipse. Can you imagine the light of the Sun fading to darkness in the middle of the day when you did not know what an eclipse was? Yikes!!
The Upcoming Eclipse’s
On August 2nd the New Moon and Solar Eclipse will be in the Astrological Sign Leo. If you have planets in Leo this eclipse will activate you. The energy of this eclipse being in Leo will spotlight royalty, world leaders, creativity, independence, passion and lots of drama!! The planet Mercury will also be part of this eclipse pattern. Mercury is the planet of communication and information, so communication during this time will be highlighted, as Mercury the messenger of the gods will be playing his role too. By the way, this is certainly an appropriate eclipse pattern for the upcoming dramatic presidential election. Barack Obama is a Leo born August 4, 1961 and John McCain is a Virgo born August 29, 1936.
On August 16th the Full Moon Lunar Eclipse will be in the sign of Aquarius, if you have planets in Aquarius this eclipse will activate you. Aquarius is the sign of the visionary, humanity, brotherhood, friendship, rebellion and unconventionality. The planets Neptune and Uranus will also be a part of this Eclipse. Neptune is associated with illusions, mystery, the ocean, and Uranus is connected to unpredictability and surprises. Drama and surprises will be a big part of the energy in August.

Rest assured that these cycles come to help awaken us to things that are happening both collectively and personally. The life span and effects of any eclipse vary from chart to chart. It is important to have your Astrological Chart done to know what area of your life these Eclipses will be affecting you.
The definition of eclipse is to dim, to hide or conceal or to render invisible by the elimination of light. So during these eclipse cycles oftentimes things are brought to light or revealed. But, be aware things can also remain hidden. It is clearly our job to bring awareness to whatever situation we might be in. I cannot tell you how many calls I receive from people who want me to predict what will happen in an eclipse. My reply is “we can only predict possible activity based on the energies suggested by any astrological sign.” These cycles come to awaken us but we must be awake and aware of them as they happen, bringing our own perceptions of what they mean to us at any given time.
Hans Margolius says it quite well; “Only in quiet waters do things mirror themselves undistorted. Only in a quiet mind is adequate perception of the world.”
